REPORT TO THE MEMBERS

By Richard E. Dalton, Business Manager

Summer is rapidly approaching, and now is the time to make sure you are ready for work.  Is your vehicle ready, do you have a spare change of clothes, are your dues paid up and do you have copies of current certifications?  Don’t be caught unprepared when the dispatcher calls for work.

Spring has been relatively mild, and the rains not as bad as some previous years (at the time of this writing, April 1), so work should be starting quickly.  Most contractors have stated they have a fair amount of backlog to start off the construction season.

The ODOT budget for the year has been set, and it is around two billion dollars, which is a nice budget for the state and Local 18 Operating Engineers.  Many of our roadways are beginning to show signs of large potholes developing, which will need some repair.  ODOT has indicated that it will be awarding smaller-size projects this season to allow for additional bidders, more competition, and an anticipated better savings for the state.

At the time of this writing, Local 18 is currently in negotiations with the OCA Highway Heavy and AGC Building Contractor Associations for successor agreements scheduled to expire on April 30, 2021. Once a tentative agreement has been reached, ballots will be mailed to all eligible members to vote their choice.  Please take the time to vote. Typically, only 25 to 30 percent of the ballots sent out are returned, determining the next three years’ wages and conditions.
